The 8th KM De Lanerolle Memorial Debate Competition, conducted by the Past Debaters of Kingswood College was concluded on the 12th of November, with Gateway College, Kandy winning the tournament for the third successive year. In the finals, Gateway trounced Colombo International School, Kandy in what was a replay of last year’s finale.
Gateway fought their way to the finals with victories over Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy and Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala in the Quarter Finals and the Semi Finals, respectively. CIS’ passage was earned through a close win over Quarter Finalist Mahamaya College and a Semi Final win over Hillwood College. A total thirteen teams had entered this year’s competition.
The whiplash Fourth Speaker of Gateway College, Samantha Modder, was adjudged the most Outstanding Speaker of the competition, after a string of consistent performances. Gateway had earlier won the contest in 2010 and 2011, becoming the first team to claim a triple triumph in the near-decade history of the series. The Third Place was secured by Hillwood College, Kandy, who received a walkover from Maliyadeva College in their final debate.
The final was marked by the presence of eminent writer Mr. Carl Muller as the Chief Guest, with Mr. Azman Branudeen – a notable debater in the Kandy Circuit of yesteryear – presiding over the House. The full list of honours is as follows:

Kingswood was defeated by Mahamaya College in their opening fixture. Kingswood last won the KM De Lanerolle Debate series in 2007 under Inosha Alwis.
