Kingswood Prize Giving 2010

Today is Kingswood’s annual Prize Giving — the plum of the Kingswood Week. This year the evening will be presided by Minister Bandula Gunawardena. Without any undue infringements, things would kick off at 3 PM.

Kingswood’s first ever Prize Giving of this nature was in 1895, in the 4th year of the then newly set college. Of course, the number of prizes dished out at that event and their very orientations were different.

Incidentally, the only surviving prize from the earliest days is the “Denham Essay Prize”, given to the best essay in English of the  Senior School. This was first awarded in 1905.

Louis Edmund Blaze in his KFE: The Story of Kingswood, Kandy dedicates a sizable space to set out the early academic ventures of the school; including details of  its earliest prize givings.
